25 years after the fall of communism, Romania still does very little to support people with disabilities. There are no services in Sighisoara for adults with special needs or their families, except for those provided by Veritas. Four days a week a day program offers respite to families and a varied slate of activities for 10 – 15 adults – physical exercises, crafts, games, English classes, singing, dancing, a hot lunch, pottery and art, horse therapy, excursions, birthday parties – opportunities to socialize, to develop friendships and to learn new skills. Romanian staff welcome students’ ideas for new activities that can be adapted to the needs of people with a range of diverse physical, social and emotional challenges. Students are often surprised to find that this group is very welcoming and easy to relate to, whether they are leading an activity for the whole group, or giving support to an individual. A number of students who came to Sighisoara with no experience relating to people with special needs discovered that this was the kind of work they wanted to do in the future.
