The Romanian Studies Program emphasizes learning through doing. Students get to apply their talents, past experience and interests in a variety of service opportunities. Many of these take place within Veritas (Veritas Facebook), a Christian non-profit organization which grew out of RSP students concern for social justice issues. Other service settings include the local Church of the Nazarene and other non-profit organizations in Sighișoara.
Students learn how to share their experience and skills in ways which are respectful of the cultural context and empowering to Romanian co-workers. Professional supervision helps them to deal with cultural differences and to develop the qualities needed to be effective members of an international, interdisciplinary team. Reading, reflection, journaling and group discussion support learning.
All students in the Romanian Studies Program are involved in service – either in the context of an internship or practicum experience or as part of the course “Cross-Cultural Service Learning”.
